Pick Plitvice if…

  • You want the landscape people picture when they picture Croatia — terraced lakes, boardwalks over the water, Veliki Slap.
  • You are happy to spend seven of the twelve hours on a coach in exchange for four and a half hours of walking.
  • You are travelling between roughly April and October, when the full circuit, the boats and the train all run.
  • You do not mind that swimming is prohibited throughout the park.

Pick Mostar if…

  • You would rather spend the day in a town: the 16th-century bridge, the Ottoman bazaar, café culture.
  • You want the option to bolt on other stops — Kravice waterfalls, Blagaj Tekke, Počitelj.
  • You prefer less walking and a shorter drive.
  • You are travelling in winter, when Plitvice runs a reduced circuit.

The one thing people get wrong

Both trips are sold as “a day”, and both are genuinely about twelve hours door to door from Split. The difference is not the length — it is what fills those hours. Plitvice spends them on a coach and then on a boardwalk; Mostar spends them on a shorter drive and then in a town. If you are choosing on cost alone, Mostar is usually cheaper; if you are choosing on scenery, Plitvice wins and it is not close.

FAQ

Plitvice or Mostar — which is better from Split?

Plitvice for landscape and walking, Mostar for culture and a shorter drive. Both are roughly 12-hour days, so decide on what you want to look at rather than on time.

Can I do both in one day?

No — they are in opposite directions and each is a full-day trip. Give them separate days.

Which is better in winter?

Mostar. From about November to March Plitvice runs a reduced circuit with only the Lower Lakes open, and the boats and train may not operate.

Mostar Day Trip may earn a commission from partner bookings at no extra cost to you.
